What is the Greatest News?
Good news is hard to find: bills…sickness…war…death. Bad news seems to be everywhere. Some good news would be nice. Maybe a job promotion! An all-expense paid holiday! Or winning a million pounds! Would you believe there is some good news you might have missed? In fact, this is the greatest news in the world! So what is this good news?
First, we need to understand that this good news is found in a very special book – the Bible. Though evidence for God exists in creation and in our conscience, God specifically reveals Himself to us through the Bible.
Second, we need to know that the God of the Bible is a God of love. One well-known verse in the Bible, John 3:16, says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
To show how much He loves us, God gave His one and only Son (Jesus) for us. Over 2,000 years ago, God the Son, Jesus Christ, came to earth and became a man when He was born of a virgin in Bethlehem. Giving up the splendours of heaven, He went to a cruel cross where He suffered and died in our place! Now that is love!
Third, we need to realise that the God of the Bible is a God of holiness and justice. This means that God has righteous standards and cannot overlook sin. To be just, God must punish sinners, including you and me.
You might say, “I’m not a bad person!” because you think sinners are only people like bank robbers and murderers. But, in the Bible, a sinner is anyone who breaks God’s laws. God’s laws include: not worshipping any other gods, not taking God’s name in vain, honouring our parents, and not killing, committing adultery, stealing, lying or coveting.
God’s standard of righteousness is not just being better than our neighbour; it is being as holy and good as Jesus! To make matters worse, no amount of good works or religion can take away our sin. Consequently, the punishment for our sin is death and eternal separation from God in the lake of fire that was originally prepared for Satan. This is very bad news. But understanding it, is what makes the good news the greatest news in the world!
Finally, here is the really good news! The God we sinned against was willing to die in our place to pay for our sins, so that we could have everlasting life. Through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, eternal life is freely available to all!
All that remains for us to do is to accept the free gift of salvation. If we are willing to admit that we are sinners, who deserve death and everlasting punishment, and trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, then God will forgive us and wash all our sins away.
Through faith in Jesus Christ, His death, burial, and resurrection, we can be declared righteous in the sight of God and be guaranteed eternal life in heaven with God. Not only that, but we will have a brand new purpose for living and the joy of a personal relationship with God forever.
Now, that is the greatest news in all the world! Why not trust in Christ as your Lord and Saviour today?
